My husband and I strategized for 36 hours before the fireworks on how we were going to get there and more importantly, how we were going to get home with our two kids. We even drove down the day before and scouted out the situation-best place to park the car, easy access to the hill, easy access out. Finally, 7pm last night we set out on our adventure. The kids were fed, but Mommy and Daddy still needed stop downtown for a quick slice. A good half way stopping point. The kids were amazing. They rode their scooters all the way from our house to Fort Baker. (Its between 3 and 4 miles.) My two year old wasn’t phased. And my 6 year old could have kept riding into the night. They were weaving in and out of people. The road was closed to cars, so it was a little less nerve-racking. Daddy rode with them on his fancy new skateboard and I followed behind with the ‘support vehicle’ (our stroller). No injuries, just a lot fun. We got their just in time to find a good spot, set up the tripod and have a quick snack. It was magical. We were all in awe together. My little family and thousands of others around us, all astounded. It was the best fireworks show I have ever seen. After the show, with our car strategically placed, we managed to get home in under an hour. Not bad. The kids were cozy and warm and that’s all that mattered at that point. My 2 year old stayed awake the whole ride home. I think he was still jacked up by the event he had just witnessed. Its a lot to take in for a 2 year old. My daughter was bent over at the waist, head hung low, fast asleep for most of the ride. When we finally pulled into the driveway, I carried her up, pjs already on, (yes that was planned too), and tucked her in bed. That’s got to be one of the best feelings I can remember as a kid. I’d pass out in the car on the way home and the last thing on the planet I wanted to do when we got home, was to walk myself to bed. The ‘carry’ was the best. All the way to the bed. My daughter said as soon as I shut the door, she was asleep. She was safe, snug and worn out! Kenjo took a bit more work. By the end of The Lorax, he was toast, but I read one more, just to make sure.
Here are two of the 300+ shots I took last night. The waterfall of light from the bridge was amazing. Rainbow colored to boot! Definitely appealed to my crowd. We love rainbows in our house.
